I set up an appointment with a seller’s real estate agent for a residential property. She was representing a major real estate brokerage in the Cleveland area.
I drove up to the house at the scheduled time. The real estate agent stepped out of the house and introduced herself. She was dressed formally and made a good first and impression that lasted approximately 2 minutes. One of her first comments was, “Oh, you are not dressed”. From my standpoint, I was dressed appropriately, in jeans and T shirt, to meet her and see the house for sale. I reckon she was into reading books by the cover; I would recommend to her a book by Judith Sheindlin titled; Beauty Fades, Dumb is Forever.
During the house tour (I think she figured she would complete the tour in the shortest feasible time), she commented, “the kitchen will sell this house”. The kitchen was in fact not too bad and the real estate agent was right in highlighting the kitchen in the marketing materials. It was the best feature of the house but her comment was frivolous. The house overall was frumpy. The effort to detail the house by staging was not adequate to hide the drawbacks of the house. It was a poorly designed multilevel house on a smaller lot with inadequate natural light and ventilation. Anyone buying that house would be buying a depreciating non-asset. And I don’t think the home owners did their homework completely, by hiring this real estate agent.
The house is still up for sale after being on the market for several months.
